How can sport turn concern about climate change into practical action?

Whether you work at a sports club, support a community programme or simply care about sport’s future, understanding where to start can help you make a difference.

Final Third’s accredited Carbon Literacy for Sport course explores climate change and sustainability through the lens of sport. Our next online course starts on 10 December, bringing participants together over two mornings to learn, share ideas and identify actions they can take.

Make sustainability relevant to your role

Sport brings people together, creating opportunities to engage colleagues, fans and communities in environmental action.

This course connects climate change with the sporting world, helping you build your understanding and consider how you can contribute through your own role or organisation.

You don’t need to be a sustainability specialist to take part. The course is designed for sport enthusiasts and professionals who want to develop their knowledge and turn it into practical action.

Who is the course for?

The course is suitable for people across sport, including:

  • Club staff and volunteers

  • Coaches and community programme teams

  • People working in sports charities and foundations

  • Individuals responsible for sustainability or fan engagement

  • Sport enthusiasts interested in climate action

Joining colleagues from different backgrounds also offers an opportunity to share perspectives and explore ideas together.

Meet your trainer: Rich Holmes

The course will be delivered by Rich Holmes, a sustainability strategist, educator and campaign developer working at the intersection of football, community and climate action.

Rich combines a background in the football industry with experience across education and social impact. Through Final Third, he works with clubs, charities and purpose-driven brands to develop campaigns, school programmes and fan activations that make sustainability accessible and meaningful.

His approach focuses on helping people turn ambitious ideas into practical, engaging action, with equity, collaboration and long-term impact at its heart.
